                                    CSCI 437 – Local and Metropolitan Area Networks

 

Objectives: 

 

The course focuses on the broad and evolving field of computer networks. The aim of the course is to provide a balance among breadth, depth and timeliness. The practical considerations of planning and wiring networks will receive particular attention.

1-     Equip students with basic knowledge and skill that enable them to plane

      networking solutions.

2- Provide hands-on training on network set-up and management.

 3.  Topologies and  Transmission media   for LANs AND MANs

 4.  Protocol Architecture.

 5.  Logical Link Control

 6.  Traditional Lans.

 7.  High-Speed Ethernet-Like LANs

 8.  FDDI

 9.  ATM LANs.

10. Wireless LANs

11. LAN/MAN Performance

12. Bridges

13. Routers and Internatworking

14. Network management.

 

Computer Usage:

Training and hands-on experiments on setting-up and managing of networks.

 

Criteria for Evaluation and Grading System:

 

- Assignments and labs                            30%.

- Two-midterm tests                               40%.

- Final Exam                                           30%.
